Warm temperatures persist across New Mexico

This afternoon brings another round of record breaking temperatures to New Mexico. This warmer weather will be sticking around through the end of the week.

Yesterday saw many cities and towns across New Mexico shatter old records. In partnership with the record breaking temperatures, Albuquerque saw its first 70 degree day of the year. A whole month ahead of average. The incredibly warm temperatures are the result of a wide region of high pressure to the south of New Mexico.

Today the region of high pressure continues to the south of the state. Upper level from is still predominately southwesterly. Continuing to draw warm air into New Mexico. Another afternoon of record breaking temperatures are expected from Santa Fe down to Deming.

Wednesday will see the upper level winds flatten from southwesterly to westerly. This change to westerly flow will increase the wind speeds over New Mexico. Resulting in stronger wind gusts at the surface. Gusts upwards of 45 mph are possible in eastern New Mexico. A combination of the strong gusts, warm temperatures, and dry air over New Mexico is leading to an increased fire threat Wednesday afternoon for eastern New Mexico.

Another weak cold front will move through eastern New Mexico on Thursday. This will cool temperatures off by 5-10 degrees across eastern New Mexico Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will warm back up again on Friday.

Winds are expected to pick up again on Saturday as a short wave begins to move across northern New Mexico. This will once again result in an increased fire risk for eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon.
