Teen to stay in juvenile detention until he turns 21 for 2023 Albuquerque murder

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Another teen who pled guilty to a drug robbery turned murder will remain locked up until he turns 21. Lorenzo Lovato was 14 years old in July 2023 when police say he, Luis Diaz, and Micalas McClendon Jr. shot and killed Alana Gamboa near Kathryn Ave. and Columbia Dr. Investigators used social media conversations, witness information, and surveillance video to link the suspects to the crime.

During a hearing Tuesday afternoon, the victim’s family had harsh words for Lovato. “You can pretend this doesn’t affect you and walk around with your facade. Mark my word. You will remember me. You will remember my daughter. You might only be facing six years, but one day you will have to answer to a higher power that you can’t escape. There are no plea agreements in the afterlife.”

Lovato apologized to Gamboa’s family during Tuesday’s hearing.
