KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Whether it’s machine or human, the work starts now to create one-of-a-kind Super Bowl goods.
Sandlot Goods is a locally based company that manufactures baseball hats, selling them online and is made in KC stores. Their latest creations feature wool koozies and caps bearing Chiefs colors and verbiage.
Since they cut and sew on demand, Sandlot Goods decided to spread that love to the City of Brotherly Love by creating green caps featuring the ‘Birds.’
Those Philadelphia caps will be sold exclusively online starting Thursday. You may be asking, ‘Why is the company creating items for the competition?’ Well, they see it as a business opportunity. “We’ll discount it and maybe donate it back to Philly, potentially,” said Thomas McIntyre about what happens to any unsold merchandise. “At the end of a day it’s a game and we’re just proud that we make products here in the U.S., and football is a U.S. sport.”
Eileen’s Colossal Cookies is also creating custom designs for the Super Bowl. Their locations in Liberty and near Zona Rosa are selling 12, 14, and 16-inch cookie cakes featuring the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I can’t say I was fond of making the Eagles cookies but, you know, when it’s requested, I will do it,” said Hannah Stumpner, who is the general manager at the Liberty location.
That reaction is how most of us feel thinking about the other team, but the Eagles aren’t featured too much in this year’s Super Bowl spread. You can pre-order cookie cakes featuring the stadium, Travis Kelce’s “make a little love” comment, or shirtless Jason Kelce, which is back by popular demand.
“He was a big seller last year,” added Stumper.
On a typical weekend they make about 15 cookie cakes, but last Super Bowl saw upwards of 300.
Orders must be made at least two days prior to the Super Bowl, and, starting next week, they will have a table up front with all of their Chiefs goods so that you can easily pick it up.
Drew Burr with The Bunker in Westport is hoping his business will have that kind of success over the next 10 days. They just got five new Chiefs/Super Bowl-related shirts delivered on Tuesday, with at least one more expected to drop Friday.
One of the more popular ones features the Chiefs and New Orleans, an homage to the host city.
“These will be gone by the time Sunday evening rolls around,” Burr said.
The Bunker is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and also features other items pertaining to Kansas City and its sports teams.
