EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Doña Ana County Fire Rescue Chief Shannon Cherry retired effective Friday, Jan. 31, the County said in a news release.
Cherry served in various roles for more than three decades, the County said.
“Cherry’s decades-long career included roles as a volunteer firefighter, career firefighter, fire instructor and fire chief. He is largely credited with securing funding for equipment, fire apparatus, the construction of new stations while remodeling older ones and overseeing the development of a new administration facility,” the County said.
Deputy Chief Eric Crespin will serve as interim chief until a permanent replacement is selected.
“We’re going to continue to move and maintain that progression that Chief Cherry gave us and we’re going to continue to do great things,” Crespin said.
Las Cruces Fire Chief Jason Smith also retired effective Friday.
