Cold start to the week. What you need to know

It was an incredibly cold start to the morning across New Mexico today. Temperatures will stay frigid through the day.

Northerly flow from the jet was prominent over New Mexico late last night and into this morning. This northerly flow brough down frigid arctic air into the State. This air led to bitterly cold morning lows. In fact, much of New Mexico saw record breaking low temperatures this morning. Even non-record breaking cities still saw the coldest temperatures in years. Temperatures across this afternoon will remain bitterly cold. While forecast temperatures are expected to reach above freezing, wind chill will keep the state feeling much colder.

Temperatures will begin to gradually warm up tomorrow afternoon. However, Thursday the jet stream shifts towards northerly flow over New Mexico once again. This change in flow will bring down frigid air into New Mexico once again. Thursday afternoon will be on the colder side. Though not as cold as the temperatures we have seen today.

By Saturday the jet stream will have shifted once again. Only this time the shift will be towards southwesterly flow. This new direction will be drawing in warmer air into New Mexico. This will lead to warmer temperatures over the weekend.
