Not only do the labs employ more than 17,000 employees and roughly 2,000 student interns but they ensure money goes right back into the community through small businesses. “The labs also spent 1.7 billion dollars on subcontracting, which includes more than a billion dollars in subcontracting to small businesses. The second year in a row we have eclipsed a billion dollars to small businesses,” said Zach Mickelson, small business program manager, Sandia National Labs.

Sandia’s impact wasn’t just seen economically. The labs also filed more patents and licenses last year, all of which involved new technologies developed at the labs, and they introduced more than 10,000 students to STEM.
