NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The Department of Cultural Affairs is overseeing an investment in capital infrastructure improvement for the Fort Stanton Historical Site. A press release states this is the largest investment since President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Over $7.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act and the New Mexico State Legislature infrastructure improvement funds has been invested since July 2020. In-progress and completed projects include extensive rehabilitation of the Nurses’ Quarters, Laundress Quarters, Hospital, and seven other buildings, a new roof on the Visitors Center, fire mitigation for the site, and upgrades to the drinking water and wastewater systems.
The release states in 2025, another $500,000 will be invested to repair fire station doors, add bear-proof garbage cans, preserve additional buildings, and improve site interpretation.
