APD: Multiple serious injuries in overnight DWI crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is investigating a crash involving multiple injuries that happened early Saturday morning. Around 2:00 a.m., APD got word of a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of San Mateo Blvd and Cherokee Road.

Police say a grey Ford F-150 was traveling north on San Mateo in the center lane. The driver, who APD says was under the influence of alcohol, was speeding, lost control of the truck, and crashed into the eastside curb. The vehicle rolled and landed right-side up.

APD says there were seven people in the truck between the ages of 15 and 20. Six were transported to the hospital. One was ejected from the vehicle and sustained moderate injuries. The driver and two other passengers were seriously injured.

The driver admitted to drinking alcohol before the crash and said there was an argument between all the passengers leading up to the crash. Another passenger told police the driver jerked the steering wheel during the argument, which caused the crash.

The driver has been identified as 18-year-old Eddie Madrid. DWI charges are pending.
