Belen Consolidated Schools addresses possible data breach

BELEN, N.M. (KRQE) – Belen Consolidated Schools warned students, families, and staff about a possible data breach Thursday. Superintendent Lawrence Sanchez said the PowerSchool student information system, which works with schools across the country, was subject to an attack that may have possibly resulted in the theft of student and employee personal information.

PowerSchool became aware of unusual activity within its system in December and has launched an investigation to determine if there was unauthorized access to student or staff information, according to Sanchez.

BCS said the types of data potentially involved may include the following:

  • Student names
  • Grades
  • Addresses
  • Other details typically stored within the system

At this time, BCS said it cannot confirm if sensitive data was accessed or compromised. The school district said it is reviewing and enhancing its existing security protocols out of an abundance of caution.

Sanchez said BCS will provide more updates as information becomes available.
