NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Snowfall continues across New Mexico this afternoon. Wind chill has the state feeling bitterly cold temperatures.
The afternoon sees the final round of snow from this winter storm. The low pressure system is over the bootheel of New Mexico. Semi-widespread snowfall is already being seen. At noon. the snowfall is predominantly west of I-25. As we move throughout the afternoon, this snowfall will move towards the southeast.
This snowfall is trending on the lighter side. Dustings were seen in Albuquerque and the metro this morning. Larger amounts of snow were seen in the southern regions of New Mexico. The heaviest snowfall tonight is expected to be in southeastern New Mexico.

Road conditions are arguably the worst in southeastern New Mexico. Everywhere from Vaughn to Clovis and down to Hobbs is experiencing severe driving conditions due to the inclement weather. In the northeast, wind gusts are reaching 40 mph this afternoon. This will cause blowing snow that will impact visibility while driving.
Along with the snowfall, temperatures are staying on the frigid side. This morning a cold front allowed temperatures to dip well below freezing across the state. They will not be warming up very much in the afternoon. Or tomorrow for that matter. Temperatures will stay near or below freezing for most of New Mexico. In fact, Friday will mark the 4th day of below freezing temperatures for several cities in central/ south central New Mexico. Wind chill is also not helping out temperatures feel any warmer. With wind chill added in, temperatures are feeling much colder. For places across northern and central New Mexico, the wind chill will have them feeling like they are 20 degrees below zero tomorrow morning. A Cold Weather Advisory is in place until the morning of Friday January 10th.
The low pressure bringing out snowfall today will continue its track towards the south tonight. This means that the snowfall will wrap up across the state tonight and early Friday morning. Friday afternoon should be calmer and dry.
An upper level trough will clip northern New Mexico over the weekend. It will start off bringing breezy weather to New Mexico on Saturday. Saturday will also see light snowfall to the far north. On Sunday, the snowfall will expand further south to the Northern Mountains and the northeast plains.
