[1] One dead after police shooting in Hobbs – State Police say two officers pulled over a man in a white Dodge Charger near E Marland Blvd. and S Fowler St. in Hobbs. Chief Troy Weisler says two officers fired their guns and the suspect was killed. No officers were injured in the incident. Information is still limited at this time.

[2] NM attorney general seeks to stop $1.9 million severance payment to WNMU president – Attorney General Raul Torrez is working to stop a nearly $2 million severance payment from going to the now former president of WNMU. Dr. Joseph Sheppard stepped down from his post after a state auditor report found he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on expensive travel and furnishing the president’s residence between 2018 and 2023. The Board of Regents is poised to give him a $1.9 million severance. Torrez has filed an emergency motion to stop the payment.

[3] Snow forming around NM; colder and windier weather – Other than snow winding down in the Four Corners, light snow activity with low-elevation light rain will become more widespread north of I-40, in the West Mountains, and later today, in Southern New Mexico. More moisture with the colder air in place will lead to heavier snowfall south of I-40 later this week, but winter-like conditions will persist for all.

[4] Federal report: New Mexico sees 20% increase in homelessness – The Department of Housing and Urban Development report shows homelessness grew nearly 20% in New Mexico last year when compared to 2023, with an estimated 4,600 people homeless on a single night. New Mexico also saw a significant rise in the number of homeless veterans by about 16%, one of the highest increased in the country.

[5] Albuquerque City Council elects new president and vice president – The first meeting of the year marked a change in leadership for the Albuquerque City Council. Councilor Brook Basaan, representing District 4, is the new president. Councilor Klarissa Peña, representing District 3, is the new vice president. They will step into the roles of former president, Councilor Dan Lewis, and former vice president, Councilor Renee Grout.
