Truck crashes into Albuquerque home damaging gas, electric, and structure

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A truck plowing through an Albuquerque home tore through a gas line and knocked out electricity. That’s not only left a family without their car but a place to stay.

What started as a low-key New Year’s Day for an Albuquerque family near Unser and McMahon quickly turned into the unexpected. “It was just the loudest crash like I thought something landed on our house or there was like a bunch of balloons. I was thinking did a gondola take off our roof? It was just a horrendous crash,” said Desiree Ginn, owner of the home.

Ginn and her husband were in their kitchen when they felt the house shake before knowing what happened they ran to check on their ten-year-old son. “We got upstairs and he was out of his bedroom freaked out said it wasn’t him we ran outside my husband came around the corner and just saw a car in the side our house,” said Ginn. Ginn said a truck was speeding through their neighborhood and lost control hitting another car before ripping through their home.

Outside, the damage stacked up with the driver hitting a recycle bin, a bike, a power meter and then a gas line before tearing into the home’s garage. “Our shelves are off the wall and our car is turned sideways and almost hit our other car,” said Ginn. Their family car is still burried underneath the rubble, while their other collectible car isn’t drivable.

Aside from not having a car, Ginn said the damage doesn’t end there. “When you look at it, you’re like ‘oh it’s just a hole,’ you know board it up and you know wait for people to come fix it. So that’s all I thought… but it was the gas and the electric and the fire department that said ‘no structural instability, gas problems, you can’t be in here, red tag,” said Ginn.

The family has been told it will be about three or four months before they can live in their home again. In the meantime, they’re staying with relatives nearby, hoping to find a rental home. “We’re just kind of finding what to do, where to live, and what to do with the car,” said Ginn.

Albuquerque police said the driver who caused the crash wasn’t impaired but may have suffered a medical episode. So far, no charges have been filed in the crash.
