ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Robin Cole is left his mark on the Lobo football program 50 years ago. He will now be enshrined in its football stadium forever.
Cole will become the seventh former Lobo player to be formally inducted into the football Ring of Honor during Saturday’s homecoming game against Fresno State. He joins Mike Williams, Bobby Santiago, Don Perkins, Brian Urlacher, DonTrell Moore and Terance Mathis as players to have their names permanently displayed in the stadium.
During his career at UNM from 1973-76 Cole was a constant presence for the Lobo defense. He currently ranks second all-time in career sacks and still holds the UNM single-season record with 17 during a 10-game season in 1975. In 1976 he was named the WAC defensive player of the year and third team All-American.
Following his collegiate career, Cole was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His NFL career spanned 12 years and he was a two-time Super Bowl champion.
