Strong storms possible in parts of New Mexico Tuesday

Showers have been brining much needed rain to parts of New Mexico Monday. More storms will develop Tuesday afternoon.

Moisture has been streaming up into New Mexico Monday ahead of a strong low pressure system. For parts of the state, it has been raining since early this morning. The rain and cloud cover across northern and central New Mexico has been keeping temperatures much cooler today. Spotty showers and a few thunderstorms will continue to be possible overnight across the western two-thirds. Breezy west winds will pick up across the western half of New Mexico by Tuesday afternoon, bringing drier air and an end to the rain to areas west of the Rio Grande Valley. Meanwhile, strong to severe storms will be possible northern and eastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon as a cold front also sweeps across the state. Storms will move out of eastern New Mexico by late Tuesday night as drier air moves into the entire state.

A stretch of dry and warmer weather begins Wednesday across New Mexico. Highs will climb back into the mid 80s in Albuquerque while temperatures get back into the mid and upper 90s in southeast New Mexico. Moisture gets drawn back up into the eastern half of New Mexico starting Friday, bringing isolated afternoon storm chances to areas along and east of the central mountain chain Friday, then expanding into northern New Mexico Saturday as another cold front sweeps across the state. This will bring a slight cool down across New Mexico through the weekend as well.
