[1] Trial begins against former BCSO deputy accused of pulling gun on two people – Opening statements in the trial against former BCSO Deputy Michael Borrecco took place on Monday. In January, police were called to the Circle K on Osuna for reports of someone shouting at people and pointing a gun. State prosecutors claimed Borrecco abused his power and committed assault when he pulled out his gun on the two men. Borrecco’s lawyers said their client is a hero and was trying to protect the city and claim that the two victims made the story up. Borrecco is facing one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and negligent use of a deadly weapon while intoxicated. 

[2] Funeral service held for Albuquerque police officer Bianca Quintana – Officer Bianca Quintana was laid to rest Monday. She was killed in a hit and run while off duty in August. Officer Quintana joined Los Lunas police in 2020 before joining APD in 2022. The 31-year-old was remembered as a friend, mother, wife, daughter, and cousin. Speakers at the service on Monday said she would go out of her way to make someone’s day better. Investigators are still looking for the driver that killed Officer Quintana. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

[3] Few storms & warmer weather for now – While rain-free conditions with relatively low temperatures are the big weather story this morning once again, slightly more mountain thunderstorms will fire off this afternoon, but most across the region will be very sunny with even higher afternoon temperatures than yesterday.

[4] Officials discuss Spaceport America growth; Virgin Galactic reports on two new spaceships – Commercial space flights are coming back to New Mexico after a pause of operations from Virgin Galactic. Monday, the New Mexico Spaceport Authority and Virgin Galactic gave an update on the state of the industry and its economic impact. Money from Virgin Galactic has been a help to the Spaceport. It’s lease and operational payments provide up to $35 million for the state. The company is now working on two new spaceships and expanding its fleet. Virgin Galactic said the Delta class spaceships should be arriving in 2025-2026 for commercial flights following test flights.

[5] Who won the 2024 New Mexico State Fair Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge? – Ten contestants from across the state competed for the crown of New Mexico’s best green chile cheeseburger Monday at the New Mexico State Fair. This year, the judges crowned Isleta Grill, near Isleta Resort and Casino, as the winner. The People’s Choice Award went to Craft Republic based in Albuquerque.
