🔶 ABQ BioPark Zoo to host Homeschool Day – Education staff and volunteers plan to teach students about adaptations, predator/prey relations, habitats and habitat design, and more. The Zoo Homeschool Day will be held on Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
🔶 Albuquerque City Council votes against bill to limit short-term rentals – Councilors Joaquin Baca and Nichole Rogers co-sponsored the bill to limit the number of short-term rentals available in certain parts of the city. The ordinance failed on a 3 to 6 vote.
🔶 Del Norte High School holding 60-year anniversary celebration on October 5 – Albuquerque Public Schools said Del Norte High School was established in 1964 on the same land the school sits on today near Montgomery and San Mateo.
🔶 2024 New Mexico State Fair: Helpful information and planned events – Fall is approaching, and that means county and state fairs are right around the bend. This year, the New Mexico State Fair is being held from September 5 to September 15.

Each year the state fair brings unique exhibits, events, and entertainment for guests to enjoy. One thing fairgoers can take advantage of is the variety of discount days and Main Street activities at the New Mexico State Fair.
🔶 Here are the new special shape balloons to look for at the 52nd Balloon Fiesta – This year’s event will include 16 new shapes, adding up to 106 special shapes in total.
🔶 UNM adding back-in parking spaces along Campus Blvd. – Crews are adding more than 100 angled spaces along Campus Blvd. right next to the dorms. Work got underway on Thursday. It’s expected to continue through October 15.
🔶 I-25 on-ramp loop at Montgomery in Albuquerque is now closed – The New Mexico Department of Transportation took down the signage Wednesday morning at the loop which will close permanently as part of the I-25 improvement project.
🔶 World Indigenous Business Forum coming to Albuquerque in October – The event will bring in more than 1,000 visitors and 20 guest speakers from around the world, to promote and learn about businesses from across the United States, and more than 20 different countries.
🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It’ll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. To get involved, you can apply here.
🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

🔶 New Mexicans can expect to see more skunks across the state – The New Mexico striped skunk is getting ready to tackle cooler weather by getting out earlier in the evening to bulk up on food. An ABQ BioPark senior zookeeper said to watch carefully for skunks between dawn and dusk when they are most active.
🔶 Santa Fe Archdiocese sets up plaque dedicated to clergy sex abuse victims – The plaque, installed at the Pastoral Center at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque, reads in part, “The archdiocese acknowledges your pain and apologizes for our failure to listen, to intervene, and to protect.”
🔶 DWI suspects keeping driver licenses due to officer ‘no shows’ – KRQE Investigates uncovered another way accused drunk drivers have been getting a free pass. It involves what officers were doing outside of the courthouse, and the problem is widespread.
🔶 $125M authorized for affordable housing program in New Mexico – The Opportunity Enterprise Housing Development Program is focused on developers building housing for families that may be ineligible for other affordable housing programs. Applications to utilize the funds are made in three rounds. The first one is happening now and will end on October 16.
🔶 Students in New Mexico develop innovative Parkinson’s treatment – The common cold has three symptoms while Parkinson’s has 22. Those include changes in speech and writing, difficulty in blinking, smiling, or walking as well as slowed movement.
🔶 Road work begins on Hyde Park Rd. leading to Ski Santa Fe – Starting September 4, the road will be down to one lane while crews work on the project. The repaving will happen on a seven-mile stretch of road from Hyde Memorial State Park to the Ski Area. Crews will work daily from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. through Friday.
🔶 Los Alamos Police Department warns public about email scam – Police say they have received several reports of emails threatening to release personal information or videos unless a payment is made. Los Alamos Police says anyone who receives these emails should label it as spam or fraud, delete it, and remember not to send anyone money or payment information.
🔶 This historic Wild West-era hotel is closing its doors in New Mexico. Here’s why – Known for housing infamous outlaws, the historic St. James Hotel in Cimarron is closing its doors in two weeks. It housed infamous outlaws like Jesse James, Bill the Kid, Annie Oakley, and other figures like Buffalo Bill.
🔶 Pecos Adventure Day taking place on September 28 – The kid’s fishing derby will take place at Monastery Lake from 7 a.m. to noon. The river cleanup will start at the Pecos American Legion and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
🔶 2 New Mexico tourism hotspots brought in millions of dollars to local communities in 2023 – A new report from the National Park Service showed that over 300,000 people descended into Carlsbad Caverns last year to see the unique rock formations and maybe even spot some bats. That report from the National Park Service revealed that over 700,000 people visited White Sands National Park.
