SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The former convict accused of killing an elderly man in Santa Fe made his first appearance in federal court on Friday. Zachary Babitz was told he’s facing federal charges for carjacking and using a gun to commit a crime for the August 6 shooting of Gordon Wilson.
Police said he stole Wilson’s car in a Santa Fe Best Buy parking lot after shooting and killing him. Babitz is facing state charges for Wilson’s murder.
The prosecution asked for Babitz to remain locked up through his trial. A detention hearing has been scheduled for next Tuesday.
Batiz is also facing armed robbery charges in Las Cruces and is accused of robbing two banks in Albuquerque.
